About the festival
Kanda Matsuri is one of Tokyo's three great festivals, held at Kanda Myojin Shrine and best known for its Shinko Sai procession, in which a long parade of mikoshi, decorated floats, and participants in traditional dress moves through the streets around Akihabara, Nihonbashi, and Otemachi.
The full-scale festival, including the main procession, is held only in odd-numbered years, with the next full edition expected in 2027. In even years, a smaller-scale festival still takes place at the shrine itself, without the large street procession.
Because the main procession covers a long route through several central Tokyo districts, it's possible to watch from many different points along the way rather than needing to be in one specific location. Exact timings and the full route are usually confirmed a few months ahead of the festival.
