About the festival

The Omagari National Fireworks Competition, known in Japanese as Ōmagari no Hanabi, is one of Japan’s most prestigious fireworks events. Held beside the Omono River in Daisen, Akita Prefecture, it is a national competition where leading pyrotechnicians present carefully judged work rather than simply contributing to one large display.

The event is especially respected for the quality and originality of its fireworks. Competitors are judged in both daytime and night-time categories, making Omagari unusual among Japan’s major fireworks festivals. The night competition includes traditional shell fireworks and creative displays, while the daytime programme uses smoke-based effects that can be appreciated against the summer sky. In 2026, 28 fireworks companies are expected to take part, with around 18,000 fireworks planned in total.

Omagari attracts dedicated fireworks fans and visitors from across Japan, so it requires early planning. Tickets, accommodation, and transport around Daisen can be in high demand. The riverside site is large, but arrival and departure can still take time, particularly after the night programme ends.

The 98th competition is confirmed for Saturday, 29 August 2026. Gates are expected to open at 15:00, with daytime fireworks from 17:10 to 18:00 and night fireworks from 19:00 to 21:30. In severe weather, any rescheduled date will be decided by organisers based on conditions.
